Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
