During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the public whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
