The musician gives twenty-five thousand pounds cash award to grassroots concert halls

The artist accepting Mercury Prize in the North East
Sam Fender received the honor last month in Newcastle

The star has donated the full amount of his £25,000 honor cash to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's small live music spots.

Fender was given the prize on mid-October as his new release his work was declared the best record of the past year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots had in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it wasn't for all the gigs I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated Sam Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a small levy to their admission fees, which supports independent venues.

He also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help thirty-eight small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation helped locations that were confronting imminent closure due to issues stemming from flooding, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted monetary aid in improving facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The idea that money from shows in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," the star has said.

He is among several artists to donate his award funds to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp received the prize in 1996 for their release the album, frontman Cocker stated that the band would donate their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her bounty among several charities, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed new equipment," Ms Dynamite told outlets.

Previously, the band donated their winnings to the youth organization that supported their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Additionally the 1994 recipients they gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"Winning was ample," remarked singer the singer. "The prize was the bonus but we didn't require the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory affected another person's life."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved two local spots in the South East, by placing them under local control.

One venue in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is funded by the arts council and supporters who acquire "shares" in the venues.
