Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
