A Number of Injured as Rough Air Hits A Delta Airlines Aircraft Landing at Sydney
Several people have been injured after a Delta Airlines jet from LA to Sydney, Australia experienced significant turbulence Friday morning.
Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it touched down at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier stated. A number of the onboard staff were injured.
The New South Wales Ambulance Service said they treated five individuals, and took three to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that included pain in the back and headaches. The injured ranged from their 30s to 70s.
The event represents the newest example of commercial jets experiencing turbulence, with researchers pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a significant contributor.
The aircraft was carrying nearly 250 travelers and a crew of 15 on the aircraft, the Delta spokesperson noted, stating that the plane landed "without further incident" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on Friday.
The NSW Ambulance Service said they received a call just three minutes prior to the plane touched down, and ambulances were ready and waiting at the airport.
The reasons turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and more severe.
